Week One: Orientation

Welcome to the first week of Data, Analytics, and Learning (DALMOOC). I am DALMorpheus, your guide into the mysterious world of Learning Analytics. This week we will begin pulling back the veil surrounding the data that is now a part of our everyday life. You should also begin pondering questions regarding our online trails we leave. What is data? How do you define ‘data’? If you’re talking about what you can retweet, what you can like, what you can read and comment on, then ‘data’ is simply social signals interpreted by your chosen connections.

But is there more than this? Is there something more we can do with the data we generate while online? Is it ethical to do these things? What privacy problems are we creating as we dig more into data?

This course gives you choice. However, your choice is not permanent. You can choose and re-choose as you like. You take the blue pill - the story continues, and you read the content that we believe is what you need to know on about “data”. You take the red pill - you leave what we believe, move to the Wonderland of the Internet, and see how deep the social rabbit-hole goes.
