Thanks for sharing! I do a similar task with my online Master’s level students where they explore the UTA library databases. You provided a wealth of resources and information to your students within the synchronous session. My students like the chat feature, too, and don’t tend to use audio/video either. I love that you are co-producing this with a colleague. I think it’s a great idea. Does it provide a “common ground” for the group? I may try short videos within the session to foster dialogue, thinking, etc. The polling is a good idea. I have had great success with polling. The idea of increasing the number of examples is good! Students like examples. I have heard every 5-7 minutes with polls, posing question to students, etc. is ideal for pacing those throughout.

Question: Do you find there’s an advantage to watching the video within the videoconference as opposed to watching it on their own?

    Good job!

Hi Peggy! Thanks for your valuable feedback as always! I wanted all the students to watch the video together as I have this in the course now and few view. It has a lot of great info about finding an article and may spark some questions.
      Thanks! Denise

  • Pat Thomas

Thanks, Denise! We could use this as a refresher for the graduate nursing students who have been out of school a long time

    • Denise Cauble

Hi Pat! I think that this could easily be made into an asynchronous activity for this group and posted in the resources.

    • Peggy Semingson

Hi Pat! We miss you! 🙂

      • Pat Thomas

Miss you guys too! It’s great to get to see what everyone is doing in this format

Denise - This is such a great way to disseminate information as well as have student work “hands-on” in locating articles. You seem to have addressed a basic issue of locating relevant articles (literature search) in a very interactive manner - without spoon-feeding by posting these articles; but actually teaching students how to find them. Our Library is a great resource, but students often don’t know or rather don’t try to navigate it. I will use this in my course too! Also, my students also prefer the Chat feature over the audio/ video - wonder why? I keep repeating the questions posted on Chat so that it would get recorded 🙂 Thank you!

    • Denise Cauble

Karabi, My groups are usually too large to use the audio in the online courses so have to use the CHAT feature. It seems that the same people do most of the chatting. I have not called on students to increase interaction yet. It is helpful to have a colleague man the chatboard in the large groups.
The library has awesome resources! The nursing librarian even comes and has a “pop up librarian” time with my students in the hall outside of the classroom to help the students.
Let me know if you do try this assignment!

Karabi, I agree with you. Yes, this is a great way to use the library resources with students!!! I will use the research study method~

This is amazing. I met a nursing professor at the TPT conference who was asking for feedback regarding this exact issue. This is amazing!

    Denise,

This is great! It benefits those who already have a good chance of successfully completing their search for an article, and is so helpful for those who are “at risk” for not being successful. I think this was a great choice for your project because finding the article is so high-stakes for their next assignment in the course.

Additionally, I like your presentation with your picture in the bottom corner. This would be helpful to use with online students. Thanks for sharing your project with us. ~ Regina

We will need to look at how we can integrate into the RN-BSN Research courses as well!

Great job Denise. As Pat says, this would be a great refresher
